Product Description

The fourth edition of Design recommendations for multi-storey and underground car parks incorporates recent developments, design feedback and advice from operators while retaining parts of the previous guidance that are still current and of significant value. The guidance follows the format of the highly regarded previous editions with the chapters on durability (Chapter 8) and on inspection and maintenance (Chapter 11) having been extensively rewritten.

Whilst this guidance is primarily intended for structural engineers, some material will be appropriate for other construction professionals and car park owners/operators. The design recommendations herein primarily relate to public multi-storey car parks above and below ground, excluding those using mechanical stacking systems.

This report complements existing codes in both the United Kingdom and Europe without repeating the details they contain. Whilst it is recognised that national variations to design requirements exist, the principles contained in this guidance are intended to be applicable worldwide.

The report addresses key areas of design in increasing detail, reflecting the typical considerations at various stages of design development. Chapters 1–3 cover agreement of the design scope and the considerations necessary for general car park layout, design and planning. Chapters 4–7 outline the structural considerations and issues related to the development of the structural form, framing and use of space. Chapters 8–11 recommend design details and specific measures that can be used to enhance durability.
