What is a person to do when faced with the need to design a structure? Traditionally, textbooks take what you might call a ‘microscopic’ approach, perhaps beginning with a prized morsel of beam theory, or a treatise on Mohr’s Circle. Or the fledgling engineer may be educated, confusingly, about an ‘element’; not a metal or an inert gas as you might imagine, but something altogether more exotic called a ‘pin‑ended strut’, or a ‘simply-supported beam’. From these unhelpful beginnings, an engineer is left to extrapolate the rest of the structure for themselves. It would only be coincidence if such a microscopic beginning could reliably generate a holistically good answer for the whole structural project. Not much use for practical engineering design — it’s rather like trying to design a computer from the chemistry of silicon.
