Your final years of school are the right time to start shaping your studies towards engineering.

Structural engineering is one type of engineering. There are a huge amount of rewarding careers available within the engineering sector and it can be tricky to know where to start.

Resources

There are lots of great resources available online to help you make the right choice:

#Thisisengineering - how engineering is at the heart of everything

This great site delivers an exciting overview of the amazing jobs available in engineering, and lets you meet real engineers like Ala - who did work experience here at IStructE!

Tomorrow’s Engineers - get inspired and find your path in engineering

Designed to help you find the branch of engineering that’s right for you, with great blogs and articles by people in the business - like structural engineer Christina Varnarva.

Choose the right studies

If you’re studying in the UK we recommend that you take mathematics and physics (A levels or Scottish Highers). For your other studies you can choose anything you like - from art to geography. You can also apply for a civil/structural engineering degree with a level 3 BTEC.

Ask an engineer to visit your school

Email your local IStructE Regional Group - they may have a member available to visit your school and give a talk - there is nothing as inspiring as meeting an engineer in person.

Visit the Big Bang Fair

This annual event is an amazing opportunity for anyone aged aged 7-19 to meet engineers, take on fun challenges, and discover careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) in the UK.
