This one-day, online course is designed to offer an understanding of structural engineering in relation to buildings to construction industry professionals.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the course, attendees should be able to:

  • Gain appreciation of how forces due to gravity and other effects are resisted in a building’s structure

  • A knowledge of the tools available to the structural engineer to counter these effects

  • Appreciate the concept of efficient design and its impact on embodied energy cost

  • Gain an appreciation of finite element analysis methods

  • Appreciate concepts such as ‘statically determinate’, ‘nonlinear analysis, ‘local effects’, and ‘composite elements’

Chris is an Associate Director and Mason Navarro Pledge. Chris created this highly interactive course in 2017 and has been delivering it ever since. Chris has been working in the field of structural engineering for over 30 years and draws from his experience from developing structures for a large variety of buildings ranging from music halls through to stadia and everything in between.
