Reuse of existing structures and façade retention schemes are increasingly adopted to improve the carbon impact and preserve heritage assets across the UK. Acting as both permanent and temporary works design engineers across a number of complex refurbishment projects, Renaissance have developed permanent design solutions to improve buildability and utilise existing structures to reduce required temporary works; the most notable example of which was implemented on the Glassworks façade retention. The new steel frame was carefully designed to be inserted in and around the existing building frame, with demolition of the existing floors and construction of the new floors undertaken using a ‘top-down’ construction approach. Taking this unique approach allowed circa 90 tonnes of temporary hot rolled fabricated steelwork to be removed from the scheme, equivalent to circa 168 tonnes of embodied carbon (168tCO2e). This presentation covers key design considerations including:
The considered stepped process of assessment to reach the adopted solution
Alterations to the permanent structural solution to enable the proposed sequencing
Onsite delivery in collaboration with the main contractor and appointed subcontractors

This technical lecture explores the dynamic performance of floors as we strive to use more sustainable solutions on the road to Net-zero design.
This practical course helps structural engineers to confidently approach a refurbishment or reuse project, looking at the initial steps to understand an existing structure, how to apply basic conservation principles and the design implications and considerations.
This half-day in-person course provides guidance to early-career structural engineers to develop a better understanding of geotechnical engineering and use that knowledge to enhance and promote sustainable design.
This popular course offers a series of interactive sessions, supported by individual study. It is designed to empower participants with the skills and knowledge needed to design structures that achieve net-zero emissions.
An online technical lecture on the management of the circular economy in construction by Jonny Burke.
This presentation explores how altering permanent structures can minimise - or eliminate completely - the need for temporary works.
