This primer from Allan Mann presents an introduction to the practicalities and demands of erecting steel structures.

Synopsis

The IStructE Health and Safety Panel runs a Design Risk Assessment Workshop each year. The 2021 event included a task related to steelwork erection and it became clear to the organisers that experience of the practicalities and demands of erection was lacking among attendees. This is not unnatural in younger designers at the start of their careers. This primer has therefore been prepared as an introduction to the topic with an emphasis on safety.
