Sharjeel Larik shares his thoughts on the Structural Awards

As a child, I found myself captivated by the grandeur of construction sites, accompanying my uncle, a contractor working on ambitious projects in northern Pakistan. Those early experiences ignited a passion for civil engineering that has guided my career ever since. Today, I am a structural engineer with around a decade of experience, currently serving as an associate at AECOM, where I lead structural aspects along with project management roles on projects like the Tung Chung West Station and tunnels for the Mass Transit Railway in Hong Kong.

The Structural Awards hold a special significance for me as they symbolize the pinnacle of structural engineering excellence. They serve as a platform where innovation, creativity, and technical prowess converge to redefine the boundaries of our field. After winning the Institution's Young Structural Engineering Professional Award 2023, I received the invitation for my inaugural role as a judge for the esteemed Institution of Structural Engineers Structural Awards, an opportunity that has been both enlightening and enriching. The process has been a tapestry of emotions - from the sheer excitement of exploring groundbreaking projects to the humbling realization of the immense talent within our industry and the extraordinary work that goes into these award-winning projects. Each submission I reviewed was a testament to the boundless creativity and technical excellence of structural engineers worldwide.

Delving into the technical intricacies of every project has been a highlight of this journey. From unraveling innovative structural solutions to admiring creative design approaches, each entry has offered a glimpse into the remarkable ingenuity of our profession. Engaging in discussions with seasoned judges, exchanging insights, and debating the merits of each project have been invaluable learning experiences that have broadened my perspective on structural engineering.

Amidst the joys of discovery, the challenge of selecting the standout entries loomed large. The competition was fierce, with a multitude of exceptional projects vying for recognition. Each submission brought its unique strengths to the table, making the task of narrowing down the selection both exhilarating and daunting. The introduction of the Planet, Process, People, and Profession criteria in the judging process has been transformative. By evaluating entries against these rigorous benchmarks, we are not only acknowledging technical expertise but also emphasizing sustainability, social impact, and professional integrity. This shift has broadened the scope of projects considered for recognition, fostering a culture of inclusivity and innovation within the industry.

The actual judging process was a meticulous journey that spanned weeks of intense deliberation. With a panel of 20 judges and an impressive 80 projects to evaluate, the task was monumental. Each judge meticulously assessed 18-20 projects, shortlisting the top contenders before engaging in marathon discussions to determine the winners. The process was a blend of detailed analysis, intense debates, and democratic voting, culminating in the selection of projects that truly stood out in their respective categories.

As we navigated through the labyrinth of exceptional submissions, tensions ran high, personalities clashed, and alliances were formed and broken. The drama unfolded behind closed doors as judges passionately defended their favorites, leading to heated exchanges and riveting moments of suspense. The topic of most debate and discussion went around some projects adopting complex approaches while others justifying no action or minimum action with calculations – the question was “is doing less better?” and can the team award a project which had plenty of analysis and design done to justify no need to do any physical work in strengthening an existing structure to prolong its life? In the end, consensus emerged from the chaos, as the most deserving projects rose to the top, basking in the glow of recognition and acclaim.

In conclusion, my journey as a judge for the Structural Awards has been a transformative experience. It has deepened my appreciation for the art and science of structural engineering, broadened my perspective on what constitutes excellence, and reaffirmed my belief in the power of collaboration and innovation. As we celebrate the winners and honor the visionaries behind these remarkable projects, I am reminded once again of the profound impact that structural engineers have on shaping the world around us.
