EEFIT returned to Nepal following the devastating Mw 7.8 earthquake which struck Gorkha, Nepal on 25 April 2015. This talk discusses the recovery, reconstruction and “build back better” approach, analysing both the physical reconstruction and the institutional framework for Disaster Risk Reduction.

During the Return Mission the Team evaluated:

  • The 5 Year Post Disaster Needs Assessment and the Post Disaster Recovery Framework, produced by the Nepal Government, against progress to date
  • The status of recovery of schools, hospitals, historical monuments and private housing
  • The status of recovery of critical transport infrastructure
  • The reconstruction and retrofit methodology and approach against international best practice
  • The effectiveness of earthquake protection methods
  • Study disaster management procedures, how these have changed since the earthquake and evaluate the ongoing socio-economic effects of the earthquake five years on

This lecture could enable you to:

  • Gain a better understanding of earthquake response missions
  • Better understanding of coordination between the Mission team and local partners
  • Understand unique considerations of Nepal - both geotechnical and socioeconomic
  • Understand damage typologies and responses
