The UK will host the 26th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) in Glasgow on 1 – 12 November 2021. A key component of the the summit will be the Built Environment Virtual Pavilion, which will showcase projects, events and content.

The IStructE is proud to be one of a number of organisations supporting the delivery of a Built Environment Virtual Pavilion ahead of the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP26) scheduled to take place in Glasgow this November. The COP26 summit will bring world leaders, policy makers and private sector businesses together to accelerate action towards the goals of the Paris Agreement, six years after its signing.

Operating entirely online, the Built Environment Virtual Pavilion will use an immersive virtual reality platform to give the built environment a digital presence at COP26, opening the door to visitors from around the world. It will exhibit exemplar projects and places, as well as hosting events and downloadable content.

The project has been led by the UK Green Building Council (UKGBC). The Institution of Structural Engineers has been working alongside almost 100 partner organisations including the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers (CIBSE), and world-renowned engineering firms such as Arup, Buro Happold, Mott MacDonald and Ramboll.  An open call for pavilion content will follow in the next few weeks, and Institution members are encouraged to get involved in any way they can to help make a success of this important initiative.

"Transformation of the built environment is a critical part of COP26 and the climate emergency response – and structural engineers are key to providing solutions that minimise emissions whilst maximising social development and resilience around the world."
Will Arnold, Head of Climate Action, The Institution of Structural Engineers
