The executive summary from a 2020 Research Award winning project.

The project looked at how current procedures to assess the risk of excavation-induced damage to masonry buildings ignores key aspects of the problem (e.g., the influence of building weight, slab type and openings in the facades); they also lack experimental validation. To quantify the influence of these aspects on structural damage, the team subjected four half-scale brick masonry buildings to settlements.

This project was a collaboration between Sinan Acikgoz, Harvey Burd, Burcu Gulen, and Yiyan Liu of University of Oxford; Michael Devriendt and Ben Gilson of Arup; Deniz Dalgic of Izmir Institute of Technology; Alper Ilki of Istanbul Technical University; and Muhammet Marasli of Fibrobeton.
