Speakers

Emma Crichton, Head of Engineering, Engineers Without Borders UK
Emma is a chartered civil engineer with six years experience in the Water industry in Scotland. Emma has worked on a variety of projects and has consistently believed in the importance of collaboration, impactful partnerships and the role engineering has to play in bettering our society. As Head of Engineering at Engineers Without Borders UK, she is responsible for driving forward their mission, and she leads their work to embed globally responsible engineering into curricula and throughout day-to-day practice.

Milly Dyer, University Engagement Lead, Engineers Without Borders UK
Whilst working at Engineers Without Borders UK, Milly has been able to use her passion to ensure students are getting the most out of their student experience. Her role allows her to work directly with engineering student leaders and educators across the UK, bringing them together to ensure that ethical, equitable and sustainable practices become the norm within engineering education.

Nick Francis, Director, GIRI Training and Consultancy & Professor, University of Sheffield
Nick is an award-winning engineer, experienced manager, and passionate educator. He has a track record of delivering innovative solutions to complex infrastructure problems. Having served for 16 years as an Officer in the Royal Engineers, he has extensive operational military experience and is acutely aware of the impact, and fragility, of our built environment.

James Norman, Professor of Sustainable Design, University of Bristol
James has 12 years industry experience and 10 years teaching experience. He has worked on a number of high profile and award winning projects, including the Tate Modern. He is the lead author of Conceptual design of buildings, Structural timber elements: a pre scheme design guide and Designing timber structures. He has been awarded a National Teaching Fellowship and won a University Teaching Award. Above all else, he loves educating people in the area of sustainability and is currently writing a book, Regenerative design for structural engineers.

Cleo Parker, Chapter President and Student Strategy Champion, Engineers Without Borders UK
​Whilst studying chemical engineering at the University of Birmingham, Cleo has spent her time advocating for globally responsible engineering, something which she has been able to keep up through her work as Chapter President and in her wider role as Student Strategy Champion for EWB-UK. Cleo’s passion for engineering has seen her presenting to many students and, in 2021, she was named one of the top 10 female undergraduates of the year in the UK. As elected student representative for her cohort, she also actively uses her voice to speak about bettering engineering education, with a view to adapt courses to deliver future engineers who put sustainability at the heart of design.
