Hear from the structural engineer behind the world's tallest building, the Burj Khalifa.

Listen to Bill Baker's keynote address, delivered at the 2020 Digital Design and Computation e-conference. Bill's presentation explores:

  • The importance of geometry to structural efficiency
  • Visual tools that provide insight to the structural designer
  • Designing the forces to create the structure
  • Using today’s graphical tools to utilise the ideas of Rankine, Maxwell and Airy
  • New structural expression

Digital techniques were used extensively in the design of Burj Khalifa…

…you can learn the latest techniques at the Digital Design and Computation Workshop; 19 May 2022. Join us at Institution HQ for a full day of digital engineering design for structural engineers.

Speaker

William F. Baker is a structural engineering partner at SOM. Since joining the firm in 1981, he has dedicated himself to extending the profession of structural engineering through design, research, teaching, and professional activities.

Baker is best known for the development of the “buttressed core” structural system for the Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest manmade structure. While widely regarded for his work on supertall buildings, Bill’s expertise also extends to long-span roof structures, specialty structures and several collaborations with artists. He is a Fellow of the Institution and was awarded our Gold Medal in 2010.

Webinar series: Data-driven design approaches

This webinar series teaches you new ways to approach data. The first webinar focusing on optimisation; how optimisation can reduce sources of waste in design, enable further design and streamline practice.

The second webinar uses current research and real-time case studies to discuss the range of sensing systems available and how to utilise them in your work.

In the final webinar of the series, presenters will explore how the use of sensors and digital twins can support a structural engineer’s understanding of how their designs perform in real time.
