This annual update provided an overview of the ongoing work from three fibUK commissions.

fib: what’s happening? is organised by the UK Group of fib (The International Federation for Structural Concrete). The commissions instigate research on structural concrete and publish industry guidance that goes beyond what established codes can offer.

In this update, expert speakers cover what's happening on:

  • Commission 2 - Robert Vollum, Professor of Structural Concrete, Imperial College London

This presentation summarises the structure and activities of fib Commission 2. Robert dicusses the activities of TG2.1 “Serviceability Models” and gives a brief overview of the forthcoming bulletin on restraint imposed deformations where he is contributing to the section on cracking in edge restrained walls.

  • Commission 3 - Chris Hendy, fibUK & Techical Director, Atkins

fib Commission 3 defines procedures to establish the safety of existing concrete structures and any associated requirements for interventions. Chris Hendy talks about the recent work of Commission 3 which has culminated in the production of two draft bulletins Modelling Structural Performance of Existing Concrete Structures and Existing Concrete Structures Life Management, Testing and Structural Health Monitoring.

  • Commission 5 - Ladin Camci, Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer (CTSO), CARES

The scope of fib Commission 5 (COM5) is to promote the technology for reinforcing and prestressing materials and systems and to improve their quality. This presentation provides an overview of COM5 recent activities, new bulletins, content, task groups and contribution into Model Code 2020.

Speakers

Robert Vollum is Professor of Structural Concrete at Imperial College London. His primary research interests are in the design and analysis of reinforced concrete members with particular emphasis on shear. He is a longstanding member of various professional committees including BSI 525/2 and fib Commission 2. He sits on the editorial boards of the Magazine of Concrete Research and Structural Concrete.

Chris Hendy is a member of fib Commission 3 on Existing Concrete Structures and Head of the UK Delegation to fib Technical Council. He was awarded the 2016 ICE Gold Medal. Chris is Chair of BSI bridge committee B525/10; he has written Designers’ Guides to Eurocodes and numerous standards and industry design guides. His projects include Dubai Metro Viaducts, New Medway Bridge, Forth Road Bridge and the Severn Bridge.

Ladin Camci is ‘Chief Technology & Sustainability Officer (CTSO)’ and ‘Executive Board Member’ of CARES, an international product certification body that focuses on the production, processing, supply and installation of steel products used in the construction industry. Ladin is the convener of the fib TG 5.2 and deputy convener of fib TG 7.5.
