Learn how to avoid unintended consequences to buildings in accordance with the 2022 changes to the Building Regulations.

Changes to the energy efficiency requirements are set to come into effect for homes and non-domestic buildings from June 2022. Our expert speakers discussed these updates to Parts L, F and O in the Building Requirements and explained how this will impact masonry construction. They also outlined the planned changes for 2025 relating to Future Homes Standards. 

Using Project 80 as a case study, Tony Hopkin outlined the New Future Homes regulations and how they influenced key stakeholders such as designers, constructors, and occupants. The new regulations will change the performance requirements for homes and our presenters delved into how this relates to the building itself and the services or systems attached. 

Finally, this webinar recounted the ongoing research into indoor air quality and overheating taking place on various housing sites across England.

David Boyd is a Professor of construction at Birmingham City University leading the BCU team that is researching the people and technological implications of Future Homes. He is an engineer by background but researches real live practice situations through an inter-disciplinarity approach seeking viable solutions.

Tony Hopkin is the Head of Construction, Quality and Innovation at Midland Heart. He is a Chartered Engineer, with a Doctorate from the Technologies for Sustainable Built Environments Centre at the University of Reading. He has 15 years’ experience in the housebuilding industry and his role with Midland Heart includes him overseeing: design, innovation, construction, quality, and aftercare. He also works with a number of professional bodies and sits on a number of industry groups including BSI and CABE.

Mike Leonard is the CEO of Building Alliance and is currently driving many initiatives to achieve our climate change objectives, whilst ensuring resilience in the built environment. He is involved in research aimed at improving the quality in building, preventing overheating, enhancing indoor air quality, addressing the fire risk and embracing the skills challenge. As a strong believer in the power of collaboration, Mike founded the Futures Group, a cross-industry and highly influential new homes “Think Tank”.
