The first webinar of the Modern uses of timber series focuses on fire safety compliance in structural timber.

Due to the current environmental drivers, an increasing number of tall and complex buildings being conceived that incorporate mass timber, either for the entirety of the structural frame or in parts of hybrid structures. This means that timber structures are being designed and delivered at a pace that can potentially go beyond current levels of knowledge and the competency of fire safety engineers.

The 2022 Modern uses of timber e-conference saw an expert panel introducing good practice in the engineering of structural timber, with presentations investigating advances in its use, its potential, fire safety and durability.

The first webinar on the series focuses on fire safety compliance in structural timber.

Speakers

Rory Hadden, Senior Lecturer, School of Engineering, The University of Edinburgh

Rory is a fire scientist working in the fields of fire dynamics, material flammability and combustion. His research interests include fundamental and applied aspects of the use of engineered timber in the built environment, with an emphasis on understanding the burning of engineered timber materials at the material scale and implications of this for resolving the compartment fire dynamics.

David Barber, Principal, Arup

David specialises in the fire safety of mass timber buildings. For over 25 years David has assisted with fire testing, developing new timber technologies, authoring fire safety design guides, working with timber product suppliers and completing fire safety solutions for mid-rise and high-rise timber buildings. David leads a global team within Arup that works with researchers, architects and developers in the fire safety of timber structures.

Martin Milner, Director, Milner Associates

Martin and the team at Milner Associates have a breadth of experience in the low-rise building sector to deliver off-site modular solutions, expert investigations, product design and expertise in fire risk reviews for timber structures. Martin is a Royal Academy of Engineering Visiting Professor at Edinburgh Napier University, a member of the BSI Timber Design Code Committee and authors technical publications for the Structural Timber Association. Martin delivers Dr Danny Hopkin, Technical Director, OFR's presentation.
