Project Description

A centrepiece of the Elephant Park redevelopment designed using engineered timber. The pavilion’s location among the existing trees shapes both the form of the building and the materials chosen. The roof is designed to maximise the relationship between the café and the surrounding park maximising light through the structure to the space below.

Judge’s comments

This project demonstrates that it is possible to construct in harmony with the existing surroundings of a scheme – in this case, a tree-filled urban parkland.

The scheme was designed with the full involvement of both the design and client teams with a collaborative approach. By utilising the balustrade as a structural component, the team made use of an element that would always be required but wouldn’t typically be used structurally.

A careful balance of sustainable materials and efficient design is very well executed. Clearly a labour of love from all those involved and a great showcase of the benefits of marrying architectural and structural design.
