Project Description

A 586m long bridge which resembles a ribbon and echoes the water ripples on the lake below. The hybrid infrastructure project has three widened sections for resting. Inspired by local sculptural traditions, the bridge’s pavilion explores contemporary mathematics modelling to create a porous wall that is both sculpture and playground. The bridge integrates ecology, transportation, landscape and culture.

Judge’s comments

This elegant footbridge is a dynamic assembly of unique structural features, it successfully integrates ecology, transportation, landscape, and culture, elevating the function of the bridge to a hybrid public destination fit for leisure and relaxation.

The bridge's curving path and a 6m wide deck features three bands for cycling, walking and a space for local vegetation that creates an appearance of a floating garden connecting the riverbanks. It is an aesthetically pleasing solution to connect two important districts of Shanghai and Jiangsu and great consideration was given to the local community and end-users.
