Annual grants by the Institution's Research Fund support postgraduate research projects carried out as part of a full time or part-time MSc degree programme.

Topics for study

Applications

  • Applications should be made by academic project supervisors on behalf of students. Each supervisor may only make one application per year

  • Projects may be undertaken by a student or two students in partnership

  • If you’re a student interested in a grant, please consult your supervisor

Applications will be assessed based on:

  • Likelihood of scope for further research

  • Extent of innovation

  • Relation to a practical problem

  • Feasibility

Please submit your application in English.

Conditions of the grant

By accepting the grant you agree to:

  • Select a suitable student to undertake the project, provide the required supervision and arrange the necessary university resources for the successful execution of the project

  • Deliver an A0 poster highlighting the project’s features within two months of completion of the research project

  • Produce an executive summary of 200 - 300 words within two months of completion of the research project (relating the project outputs to practice or further research required where possible)

  • Inform the IStructE technical team of any changes in circumstances that would affect the proposed project at the earliest opportunity

  • Allow all project details to appear on istructe.org, and potentially be used by IStructE for future marketing purposes to promote the grant

  • If you are not a Student Member of IStructE, you agree to automatically become a Student Member*

Grants are not transferable to other supervisors or projects.

The £800 grant will be paid in two installments: £600 will be paid at beginning of project to the supervisor for project costs including equipment, consumables and software licenses.

£200 is paid to the student on submission of all deliverables.

(*Student Membership of the Institution is free).
