What’s involved?

The exam assesses the validity of your training and experience. Our examiners need to be satisfied that you have:

  • An understanding of structural engineering principles
  • An ability to initiate and communicate structural design
  • An ability to provide effective and viable solutions to a structural design problem

Exam format

The exam is three and a half hours long.

You must choose one question from a choice of three. All questions have three parts broken down as follows:

Part a (54 marks) requires you to prepare a design appraisal with appropriate sketches indicating two distinct and viable solutions for the proposed structure including foundations. These solutions must include appropriate concept calculations to justify each scheme. You must indicate clearly the functional framing, load transfer and stability aspects of each scheme. Finally, you are asked to review and critically appraise the schemes, and identify the solution you recommend, giving reasons for your choice. Sustainability must be used as a key criterion for scheme selection.

Part b (20 marks) requires you to identify and prepare appropriate drawings to indicate the critical structural details.

Part c (8 marks) asks you to prepare design calculations to establish the form, size, and approximate A1-A3 carbon footprint for twi principal structural elements.
