My first and most pleasant duty, gentlemen, is to express my sincere thanks to the members of this Institution for the honour they have done me in electing me their President for the coming session. I wish also, and most particularly, to tender to you, gentlemen, my personal thanks, and best wishes, with the hope that every one of you, who, as yet, has not been faced with the mixed joy of writing a presidential address, may have that task thrust upon him at no very distant date.
