We want to make it as easy as possible for you to demonstrate your Masters level learning.

To become a Chartered Member you will need to demonstrate Masters level learning. You can do that in a number of ways.

You have an accredited or recognised MEng degree or equivalent:

You satisfy the Institution’s academic requirements. Not all MEng degrees are automatically accepted as they must be either accredited or recognised by the Institution.

What is an accredited degree?

A degree in civil or structural engineering from a university course accredited through the Joint Board of Moderators, or an IStructE-approved equivalent.

What is a recognised degree?

Your degree is recognised by the Engineers Europe database or the Washington Accord.

You have a Washington Accord or Engineers Europe recognised degree:
You have achieved learning outcomes at least equivalent to a BEng (Hons) degree partially accredited for Chartered Membership.

We automatically recognise second cycle degrees in civil or structural engineering of four or five years in duration.

Remember, you can demonstrate your Masters level learning by passing the Chartered Membership exam.

You have an accredited BEng (Hons) degree partially accredited for Chartered Membership and an accredited MSc degree:

You satisfy the Institution’s academic requirements and can apply for the Professional Review.

You have a BEng (Hons) degree partially accredited for Chartered Membership:

You can demonstrate your Masters level learning by passing the Chartered Membership exam - part of the Professional Review.

Your degree is not recognised by the Washington Accord or Engineers Europe:

Your qualification will need to be assessed by our Academic Qualifications Panel. If it is found to be equivalent to a BEng (Hons) degree that is partially accredited for Chartered Membership (or above) you’ll be eligible to apply for the Professional Review.

Remember, you can demonstrate your Masters level learning by passing the Chartered Membership exam.

Unsure about your academic qualifications?

Contact the membership team with the details of the degree you studied, including the course name, university name and dates of study. If appropriate we will submit your qualification for assessment.

The fee for academic assessment is £170.

If your qualifications are not of an equivalent level we will advise you how to make up the difference through further learning, eg additional formal study, sitting the Chartered Membership exam or via the Technical Report Route.

Technical Report Route

If you do not have Masters level academic qualifications you can take the Technical Report Route:

Route A: You hold a BEng (Hons) degree in structural and/or civil engineering that partially satisfies the academic requirements for Chartered Membership, or you are IMIStructE holding an accredited IEng degree or equivalent.

Route B: You do not have accredited academic qualifications but you do have considerable industry experience, with competence comparable to a Chartered Member.

Fees (Route A):
Academic Assessment: £170
Synopsis: £70
Report submission: £320
Report re-submission: £160

Fees (Route B):
