Your journey to becoming a structural engineer starts with academic study or an apprenticeship.

Academic foundation

Other members begin their careers by studying towards accredited MEng degrees in engineering, which is a great foundation for an engineering career. BEng degrees are also a good academic base. We can support you in both through Student Membership.

Apprenticeships

Some of our members choose to both work and study through an apprenticeship, which is a fantastic pathway to becoming a structural engineer. Technician Membership is a great opportunity for engineers with this background and a stepping stone to Chartered Membership.

Professional Development

After completing your studies, you go on to develop while working at your first jobs, getting the hands-on experience that cannot be learned in the classroom. You can also take on further studies and training to keep up to date with modern technology and ways of working. We support this development through Graduate Membership.

Membership

After gaining enough skills and experience, you can apply for professionally qualified membership of IStructE - the ultimate sign of professional and technical excellence and the key to unlocking a world of job opportunities.
