The Structural Engineer, Volume 28, Issue 9, 1950
A demonstration was given on June 27th last by the Structural and Mechanical Development Engineers Limited, at Slough, to show the manufacture and assembly of structural elements for the Dome of Discovery, now being erected on the site of the Festival of Britain.
The paper deals with the practical application of the normal methods of calculating the thrusts and moments in arch frames. Formulae and nomograms are provided which considerably simplify the work entailed in the design of two-pin arches. Examples of continuous arches actually carried out have been provided, together with an outline of the method of approach. Practical details such as shoe and eaves joints are considered in some detail and the merits of various types compared. R. Gray
In the calculation of the Indeterminate Structure two methods are usually employed: “The Classical Method” and the method of “Moment Distribution,” or “Joint Rotation Method.” R. Gartner
