THE reconstruction of bridges in France imposed a considerable effort during and after the 1939-45 War. It was necessary to devote to it the available resources in manpower and material, taking priority over the reconstruction of houses, of which, however,
a multitude of French people had been deprived. Nevertheless, in spite of difficulties of all kinds, large public works were reconstructed, frequently on lines entirely different from the original design.
