A Channel Link-the words have stimulated controversy, inspired ideals and technical ideas for 150 years-is at last within the realms of practical, economic and political possibility. Islanders though we are, and will remain, there can be no gain saying the diminution of the world brought about by high speed transport, advanced economic theory and the hydrogen bomb. Whilst we have treasured the twenty miles of geological discontinuity between us and the rest of Europe, and it has served us well on more than
one occasion, it must be accepted that to ' go it alone ' in the present age is a policy fraught with economic danger.
