The paper describes in detail the structural solutions adopted in the design of the superstructures of major steel framed buildings constructed on an extremely exposed site. Particular reference is made to the design of a large three-dimensional structure at high level and to the resistance to wind forces provided by reinforced concrete floor slabs acting in conjunction with vertical braced steel frames and an internal reinforced concrete tower structure. The requirements governing the design of the superstructure frameworks are defined and brief particulars are given of a wind tunnel test associated with the high level three-dimensional structure. The following reports on the Part 3 (Membership) examination and on the Technician Test held in July 1971 have been prepared from the reports of the respective examiners and are offered as a guide both to those who are preparing for future examinations and to those members and others responsible for providing appropriate training and experience within the ofice. It is hoped too that the notes will be of help to lecturers and others in colleges offering courses in preparation for one or other of the Institution’s examinations.
