In recognition of the high quality of research being carried out at the University of Glamorgan in the field of the built environment, the university, in 1993, established a research centre that is now an integral part of the School of the Built Environment. Funding was awarded, on a competitive basis, under the Higher Education Funding Council for Wales (HEFCW) Quality Research in Wales (QW) programme, and initially three research units were established, one of which, the Building Materials Research Unit, is the subject of this article.
