Read award-winning papers and discover members recognised for their commitment to the Institution.

Members of the Institution, their family and friends joined us at BMA House in London on 7 June to celebrate professional and technical excellence and outstanding commitment to the Institution. 

The event was hosted by 2023 President Matt Byatt, Chief Executive Yasmin Becker, and Deputy Chief Executive Darren Byrne.

Papers Awards 

Our judging panel recognises the best work published in The Structural Engineer each year, as well as the best lectures given at HQ or around our Regional Groups.

Murray Buxton Award - for papers of general interest

Medal: Cristobal Correa for "Jewel Changi Airport: a destination in its own right". 

Diploma: Jack Firth, Rachel Cooper and Simon Neville for the paper "Digging deep: design and construction of The Londoner hotel".

Diploma: Fergus McCormick, Tim Sullivan, Iain Hill, Paul Eddleston, Mick Slack and Rajan Mistry for the paper "Design and construction of the Compton and Edrich stands, Lord’s Cricket Ground redevelopment".
 

Guthrie Brown Award - for papers published in The Structural Engineer written by a member or members under 40 years of age.

Smail Kechidi for "Optimising the structural design of modular housing by combining timber and lightweight steel framing".
 

Clancy Prize - for papers of merit related to the understanding and practice of the whole life management of structures, including surveys, investigations, strategic planning, testing and subsequent works to the structure.

Nada Elkady, Yasser Eljajeh, Kevin Gilsenan and Levingshan Augusthus Nelson for "Design of efficient steel trusses to resist progressive collapse". 


Husband Prize - for papers of merit related to bridges

Fancesco Presta, Joe Turner and Kashif Rasheed for "An incrementally launched ramp for the SAAR Interchange in Bahrain".
 

Derrington Construction Award - for papers deemed to refer to construction and/or health and safety

Colin George, Mark Hatcher, Chris Law and Ionuţ Păunescu for "Decommissioning of the A14 Huntingdon Railway Viaduct, Cambridgeshire".
 

Oscar Faber Awards - for papers presented for discussion at Evening Meetings or colloquia of the Institution during the year

Medal: Simon Fryer for the lecture: "Lille Langebro creative engineering of a new harbour bridge in Copenhagen".

Diploma: Mark Browne and John Hare for the lecture: "Recreating history the Christchurch Town Hall reinstatement".

Diploma: Hélène Huang, Bernard Vaudeville, and Rubis Trinh for the lecture: "Bourse de Commerce: conservation and reinforcement of a historic cast iron structure".

Sir Arnold Waters Medal - for papers deemed to be the best of those that have won a Regional Group prize during the session, written by a member or members of the Institution

Stewart Tennant for "Pooley New Bridge".
 

Structures

Structures Best Research Paper Prize

Van Hung Nguyen, Jun Yu, Kang Hai Tan for "Component-based joint model for RC frames with conventional and special detailing against progressive collapse".

Hong-hui Qi, Yong Du, Jian Jiang, and Guo-qiang Li for "Improved tensile membrane action model of composite slabs at elevated temperatures".


Structures Best Research into Practice Paper Prize

Julie Devènes, Jan Brütting, Célia Küpfer, Maléna Bastien-Masse, and Corentin Fivet for "Crete – Reuse of concrete blocks from cast-in-place building to arch footbridge​".
 

Education

Excellence in Structural Engineering Education Award - in recognition to individuals committed to teaching and passing on their wisdom in the field of structural engineering

Seyed Alireza Behnejad for the paper ''The Design, Assemble and Dismantle (DAD) Project''.

Commendation: Aled Wyn Davies for the paper ''Using ‘Design Shorts’ to engage students in self and peer-supported learning".

Commendation: Tim Wilkinson, Daniel Da Costa for the paper ''Interactive teaching and real-life projects for structural engineering education in the post-Covid era''.
 

Young engineers

Young Structural Engineering Professional Award - A competition showcasing rising talent in structural engineering

Matthew James Penellum for the presentation "The Elizabeth Tower".

Sharjeel Larik for the presentation "Project delivery for Hong Kong Airport Authority Three Runway System Contract 3138 - Automated People Mover (APM) and Baggage Handling System (BHS) Tunnels and Ancillary Buildings Design Consultancy".


Kenneth Severn Award - for authors who are 28 years of age or under, who answered a question on a topic chosen by the President

Winner: Steven Birch.

Service Awards - for service by Regional Group officials and Institution representatives

Andrew James Hallum for his much valued and extensive support of the Wales Regional Group over a period of many years.

Daniel Alexander Cross Wright for his much valued and extensive support of the Scottish Regional Group over a period of many years.

Douglas James Kay for his much valued and extensive support of the Northern Counties Regional Group over a period of many years.

Andrew Carrick Smith for his dedicated service to the Institution over a period of many years, in particular as Convenor of the History Study Group.

Fergus Adrian Shaw for his dedicated service to the Institution over a period of many years.

Penelope Laura Gowler for her dedicated service to the Institution over a period of many years.

Victoria Claire Martin for her dedicated service to the Institution over a period of many years.
 

Lifetime Achievement Award

Gordon Eric Harris for his dedicated service to the Institution for a period spanning 47 years, including the Council, Membership Committee, Examination Panel, PRIs and the Surrey Regional Group.

Michael Wallace Hooper for his dedicated service to the Institution for a period spanning 42 years, including the Council, Resources Committee, PRIs and in particular his service to the Lancashire and Cheshire Regional Group.
 

President's Award
William Harvey for a lifetime of service to, and passion for, the profession of structural engineering. This was awarded posthumously by Past President Jane Entwistle.
