In this webinar recording, industry experts share actionable guidance for incorporating circular principles on engineering projects.

The climate emergency requires a shift of mindset from structural engineers, who are uniquely placed to facilitate the reuse of entire buildings and infrastructure.

Following the launch of Circular economy and reuse: guidance for designers, aimed at helping designers make the greatest impact through their projects, this webinar explored some of the key takeaways from the research included in the publication:

  • Common barriers against adopting a circular economy approach, and how to overcome them

  • Feasibility, analysis, design and construction aspects of reusing existing buildings

  • Thinking required to reuse components and assemblies

  • Best practice on design strategy, including how to influence clients at the briefing stage

Speakers

Kaspar Bajars

Principal Sustainability Engineer, Ramboll

Kaspar specializes in sustainable solutions for the built environment, focusing on circular economy, low-carbon and passive design. He leads circular economy strategies for large-scale projects from conception to handover, leveraging his comprehensive understanding of circular economy principles gained from his experience in consultancy, design and construction.

Scott Brookes

Director, Ramboll

Scott has worked on conservation and refurbishment projects on buildings of the highest cultural value in the UK, Australia and Nepal. He is a passionate advocate for sustainable development and, as a director in Ramboll’s Buildings team, is helping move the construction industry away from linear, disposable thinking into a ‘retention-first’, circular mindset.

Stephen Fernandez

Director, Arup

Steve is the global Building Retrofit Leader at Arup and is passionate about existing buildings. He has worked on many high-profile retrofit projects including the redevelopment of St. Pancras Renaissance Hotel in London, the regeneration of the Newton and Arkwright Buildings in Nottingham and the transformation of Coal Drops Yard at Kings Cross in London. Steve was also a speaker at COP26 in Glasgow, talking about how retrofitting existing buildings can help address the climate crisis and has written numerous technical papers on retrofit for the Institution of Structural Engineers and the Institution of Civil Engineers.

Nick Francis

Teacher, University of Sheffield / Director of Education, Get It Right Initiative

Nick has worked on disaster relief projects around the world and is acutely aware of the power of infrastructure to transform lives. He has a particular interest in the interplay between technical engineering and human behaviours. He teaches Civil Engineering & Management at the University of Sheffield, is Director of Education for the Get It Right Initiative, and is a trustee of Bridges to Prosperity.

Penny Gowler

Director, Elliott Wood

Penny is a Chartered Structural Engineer with over 15 years of experience in the industry and is the lead author of 'Circular economy and reuse: guidance for designers'. As Head of Sustainability at Elliott Wood, Penny currently leads a growing sustainability-focused team, which offers a range of sustainability consultancy services beyond the remit of typical structural and civil engineering.

Sam Harland

Associate Director, Civic Engineers

With a background in Structural Engineering, Sam is a passionate advocate of using drawing and sketching to explore and develop ideas, finding creative solutions to problems, establishing the right concept designs, and keeping the engineering principles simple, thus leading to efficient use of materials and practical engineering schemes. He is a senior team member of the Civic Engineers Sustainability Group leading their approach to sustainable design.

Henry Tayler

Associate, Arup

With over 15 years of experience delivering infrastructure, rail and building engineering projects, Henry has an interest in sustainable solutions in design & construction, including reuse and retrofit, and has contributed to a range of industry activities on the topic.

Brogan MacDonald

Head of Sustainability in Building Structures, Ramboll

Brogan is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Environmentalist with experience working in London and Singapore. She was the winner of ‘Best Young Woman Engineer’ in 2020 Women in Construction and Engineering Awards.

Danielle Densley Tingley Senior Lecturer, Sheffield University

Danielle is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Structural Engineering at the University of Sheffield. She is the principal investigator of the EPSRC-funded grant ‘multi-scale, circular economic potential of the non-residential building stock and the co-creator of regenerate - a tool that explores 'how circular is my building'’ - in order to engage design teams to embed circular economy strategies into building design.
